What is Community Makes?

Community Makes is an exciting initiative by Dashwood Studio to celebrate the creativity of sewists who use our fabrics by showcasing their beautiful creations on our website.

To participate, simply use Dashwood Studio fabrics and start sewing away!

You can then visit any collection page on our website and find the “Submit Your Make” option to upload a photo and details of your creation.

While we’d love to feature every submission, we aim to showcase makes in the best light possible. Therefore we’re looking for photos which meet a certain standard to showcase.

We’ve compiled some best practices and photography tips below!

To increase the chances of your make being approved and featured, ensure your photos are clear, well-composed, and well-lit. Utilizing natural light or a good lighting setup can make a significant difference.

Featured makes will be displayed throughout the website on the individual collection pages.

For example if you create a cushion with the Coral Coast fabric, then you would submit either on the Coral Coast collection page, or you can also on any page and select the Coral Coast collection.

Yes, you are welcome to submit as many creations as you like, as long as they feature Dashwood Studio fabrics.

That’s it!

While we’d love to approve every submission made with Dashwood Studio fabric, we aim to feature makes in the best light possible. We’re looking for sharp, well-composed, and well-lit photos. Most modern phones shoot at a high enough resolution, so photo away!

We’re excited to see your creations and can’t wait to feature them on our website!

To help ensure your make is approved and showcased, please have a quick read through some basic tips below!

Best Practices

To help us maintain a minimum level of quality for your submitted makes we’ve compiled a few tips to help make sure your submission is approved and displayed.

Photography

  • Lighting: Use natural light whenever possible. Place your make or model near a window to take advantage of soft, diffused light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can create harsh shadows and overexposed areas. If natural light isn’t available, use softbox lights or other diffused lighting to illuminate your make or model evenly.
  • Background: Choose a clean, uncluttered background that complements but doesn’t distract from your make. Neutral colors like white, beige, or light gray work well. Consider using a fabric or paper backdrop to create a professional look. You could also take photos of your make in a household lifestyle setting!
  • Composition: Aim to centre your make or model in the frame and ensure it is the main focus of the image. unless you’re already aware of the way your image might be displayed on the website and you’re comfortable with displaying an offset make.
  • Stability: Use a tripod to keep your camera steady and avoid blurry images. If you don’t have a tripod, stabilize your camera or smartphone on a solid surface. You can also shoot with an appropriate shutter speed above 1/80s provided ample lighting.
  • Editing: Use photo editing software to adjust brightness, contrast, and colour balance. If required crop the image to ensure your make is well-framed.
  • Resolution: Ensure your images are a high enough resolution, they don’t have to be too large in this case, but try to aim for at least 720p.

Image Uploading

To ensure that the images you upload are high-quality and adhere to our guidelines, please follow these best practices:

File Size Optimization

  • File Size Limit: The maximum file size for uploads is 875KB. This ensures fast loading times and optimal performance on our website.
  • Image Dimensions: Aim for image dimensions of at least 720px wide. Larger images can be resized to fit this requirement.
  • File Formats: Please save your images in JPEG format.
  • Compression Tools: Use online tools like TinyPNG to compress your images without significant loss of quality. Image editing software like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or even online editors like Pixlr can help reduce file size. Look for the “Save for Web” option, which optimizes images for online use.

Example Steps to Optimize an Image for Upload

  1. Take a High-Resolution Photo: Use a good quality camera or a modern phone to capture a high-resolution image. Ensure good lighting and a clean background.
  2. Edit the Image: Use software like Photoshop, GIMP, or an online editor to crop and adjust the image. Ensure the subject is central and well-aligned.
  3. Compress the Image: Use TinyPNG or similar tools to compress the image file size while maintaining quality.
  4. Upload the Image: Following these upload guidelines, ensure the final image is clear, well-composed, and meets the size requirements.
